Almost spring?

According to the meteorogical calendar, spring began on March 1, but not here... We have had considerable snow:
According to the vernal calendar, spring begins on March 21... Maybe... At least the snow is melting, the temperatures are rising, and the sump pump in our basement is running again - after a rest of about 9 months! Vegetable garden planting has started, at least indoors and in the solar shed that we had built late last spring (too late to really use).
So far, the few things that I have put out in the shed are all cold-hardy and doing fine. I have a new hi-low thermometer and it shows that it has been as low as 30* overnight, and all the little seedlings are looking good! I am using a doubled thick frost blanket to give a little shade, as on sunny days it gets really HOT out there! So far I have not put anything in the ground, but the garlic that I planted last fall is up and looking good. I do want to make a low tunnel and have the ground warmed up to move the brassica seedlings out as soon as they are big enough. For the forseeable forecast, the weather looks warmish ( 50's for daytime highs, and lows around the freezing point) so if covered, the ground could warm up quickly. Guess a trip to the hardware store is in order... I need to make a list ;-) I have been walking! Maybe not every day, but certainly more than before. Now that it is warmer, I can take Archie sometimes. But most days it is Elvis.
We have also had birthdays this past month! So now we have a 3-year-old grandson, and a 6-year-old grandson!
This one turned 3, and
This one turned 6! Today was a busy day.... cleaning, taking cuttings of the geraniums that I have kept over winter, making Archie's food, and then making a roast and chocolate pudding for hubby... who texted me to say he had to stay at work until 8pm! BUMMER! However I am so glad to be able to get all these things done! Yes, as I sit here and type this up, I am tired, but not exhausted. I still have Grandson the Eldest here until after work time for his parents (about another hour), but I got him uplugged from the TV - he has moved on to playing games on my phone! Oh, well. Maybe I can move him on to something else now.... Maybe the army men that grandpa got him for his birthday?

  1. Good heavens, that's real snow! It's definitely spring here (famous last words) - almost warm enough, though possibly not reliably so, to have friends for coffee in the garden (which is all we're allowed). Your grandsons are very cute!
